Diamonds are formed under extreme conditions of heat and pressure, deep within the Earth. They are formed in the depths of the mantle, about 140 kilometers from the crust. The raw materials from which diamonds are formed are mainly carbon, which is exposed to conditions of high heat (about 1,200-1,500 degrees Celsius) and intense pressure (about 45,000 to 60,000 times normal atmospheric pressure). Under these extreme conditions, carbon forms its unique structure, in which each carbon atom is linked to other carbon atoms by extremely strong bonds. When was diamond first discovered?
